Learn2ID is meant to be a fun way to learn. It is not a reference work, and it is not always right. Do not rely on it for any decision that matters — and never to decide whether something is safe.

What this site is

Learn2ID helps people learn to identify things of interest — animals, plants, vehicles and whatever categories we add next — and then lets them test themselves on it. It is a teaching and quiz site. It is not a field guide, a professional identification service, or advice of any kind.

Identification is genuinely hard

Photographs flatten the very details that separate one thing from another. Lighting, angle, age, condition, region and ordinary variation all change how something looks, and some things are near-copies of each other. Our identifications are made in good faith and reviewed by people, but they can be wrong, and a photo that resembles the one in front of you is not proof.

Treat anything you learn here as a starting point, not an answer. If it matters, check it against a proper reference or ask someone qualified.

Ranges and locations are approximate

Where we say something lives or is found — a written range, a list of states, a map — that is a general guide, not a boundary. Things can turn up outside of them.

Never use this site to judge whether something is safe

Some of what we cover can hurt you. Do not use Learn2ID to decide whether an animal is venomous or safe to approach, whether a plant or mushroom is safe to touch or eat, whether something is safe to handle, or whether any situation is safe to be in. If you are not certain, keep your distance and leave it alone.

When it matters, ask a professional

Nothing on Learn2ID is medical, veterinary, legal, financial or safety advice, and nothing here is a substitute for a qualified professional. If you need help, contact the appropriate expert or emergency service for your situation and your area.

Leave wild animals and plants alone

Most injuries happen when someone tries to catch, move or kill something. If something needs dealing with, call a local professional or the relevant agency for your area. Some species are also legally protected where you live.

No warranty, no liability

Learn2ID is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, UP2U LLC is not liable for any injury, loss or damage arising from the use of this site or from reliance on anything it contains. You use it at your own risk.
